Intellectual Property strategy and management consulting

Although frequently discussed in business circles, IP is often misunderstood, leading to hasty, ineffective and costly strategies. Intellectual property (IP) strategy and management in innovative companies requires a far more systemic approach than simply focusing on filing and maintaining patents or trademarks. While these elements remain important, they are only one part of IP management. At TIPM, we see intellectual property (IP) as much more than just the legal protection of innovation and trademarks. We see it as a set of intangible assets, acquired or created, offering a substantial competitive advantage only if managed and valued effectively. With this in mind, we define the IP management system as consisting of three essential layers: the strategic dimension, the tactical dimension and the operational dimension.

Strategic dimension of IP

This dimension encompasses the development of a strategy carefully aligned with the company’s long-term objectives and focused on value generation. This process involves in-depth analysis to define the “what” and “why” of IP. At TIPM, our role is to work closely with companies to develop a tailor-made IP strategy, perfectly aligned with their overall business objectives, and aimed at making the most of their intangible assets. This may involve, for example, defining an IP policy for a company embarking on Open Innovation.

Tactical dimension of IP

At this stage, we focus on IP management, which includes practical implementation, leadership and optimization of resources. This stage represents the “how” in IP management. At TIPM, we use our expertise to help companies navigate the complexities of IP management. We work with you to determine the most appropriate tactics for your strategy and resources. This may include defining an IP budget tailored to your expectations and objectives.

Operational dimension of IP

This layer focuses on the day-to-day, practical management of IP, covering protection, compliance, administrative management, as well as monitoring and reporting. It represents the “executive” aspect of IP. At TIPM, we offer practical support, using our proven methodology to assist you in making the right go/no-go decisions, valuing your IP, carrying out IP due diligence, and organizing your IP department to make it more efficient and secure.
